Maundy Thursday, the Thursday of Holy Week, marks the beginning of the sacred Triduum—the three holy days leading up to Easter. The word “Maundy” comes from the Latin mandatum novum, meaning “new commandment,” referring to Jesus’ words in John 13:34: “Love one another as I have loved you.”

About the event

Maundy Thursday, the Thursday of Holy Week, marks the beginning of the sacred Triduum—the three holy days leading up to Easter. The word “Maundy” comes from the Latin mandatum novum, meaning “new commandment,” referring to Jesus’ words in John 13:34: “Love one another as I have loved you.”

On this night, we remember the Last Supper, when Jesus instituted the Holy Eucharist “on the night he was betrayed.” We also recall His humble act of washing the disciples’ feet, a powerful sign of servant love that is echoed in our own liturgy.
