About the event
The Great Vigil of Easter is the first and most ancient celebration of the Resurrection, the pinnacle of the Church’s year. Beginning in darkness, the service opens with the lighting of the new fire and the Paschal Candle, symbolizing the light of Christ triumphing over the darkness of sin and death.
The Vigil continues with the chanting of the Exsultet, the Church’s ancient hymn of praise, proclaiming the glory of this holy night when Christ broke the bonds of death. Through a series of readings from Holy Scripture, we recount God’s saving acts throughout history, culminating in the proclamation of the Resurrection.
The liturgy then moves to the renewal of baptismal vows and the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, as we rejoice in the risen Lord. From darkness into light, from death into life, the Great Vigil invites us to share fully in the triumph of Christ’s Resurrection.
